During my OB visit yesterday I found out that my cervix is 50% effaced (thinned out) and Marley's head is nice and low in my pelvis (where we want him to be). I haven't dilated, but it is common for first-time moms to not dilate until effacement is almost complete (100%). Complete effacement can take days to weeks but it's nice to know that things are heading in the right direction.
At this visit I also did a Group B Streptococcus culture. Group B "Strep" is a bacterial organism that is found in 10-13% of pregnant women. It's part of a person's normal flora and does not cause illness. But in the case of pregnant women, passing the infection onto the newborn during a vaginal delivery has the risk of causing serious illness in the baby. The test results should come back in a couple days, and if positive, I'll be administered penicillin via IV during labor.
Gene was sick with a cold this past week. And inevitably, I caught it too - I just started feeling sick yesterday and today I've pretty much been a whining, sneezy, sniffling, and nose-blowing baby. Uugggg...I hope I get better soon. Countdown to Marley's d-day could be around the corner and I have to muster up enough energy to study for my last final of the semester that's on Monday.
